The Grand Tour of Lofoten from Svolvær

If you have just one day in Lofoten, there is one rather obvious problem: how do you fit Lofoten into it?

The islands stretch much farther than many first-time visitors expect. Svolvær makes an excellent base, but many of the places people have travelled halfway around the world to see are spread across the archipelago. Henningsvær lies in one direction, while Ramberg, Hamnøy, Sakrisøy, Reine and Å take you deep into western Lofoten.

What can you see in Lofoten in one day?

Quite a lot, if you plan it properly.

The Grand Tour begins in Svolvær, the main town and transport hub of Lofoten, before heading towards Henningsvær, one of the islands’ best-known fishing villages.

From there, we cross Lofoten and continue west towards Ramberg, Hamnøy, Sakrisøy, Reine and finally Å, at the end of the E10. It means that in a single day you can experience many of the names that repeatedly appear when researching the best places to visit in Lofoten.

This is not simply a transfer from Svolvær to Reine. The idea is to experience Lofoten as a journey, watching the landscape change as we cross islands, bridges and fishing communities on the way towards the dramatic mountains of Reinefjorden.

Visit Lofoten’s most famous Instagram and photography locations

Search for Lofoten on Instagram and it will not take long before you start recognising the same locations.

The red rorbuer beneath enormous mountains at Hamnøy are among the classic images of the Lofoten Islands. Nearby Sakrisøy, with its yellow fishing cabins and view towards Olstinden, provides another completely different version of the landscape.

Then there is Reine, surrounded by some of the most dramatic mountains anywhere in Norway.

Photography guides continue to identify Hamnøy and Reine among Lofoten’s essential photographic locations, alongside places around Ramberg and Henningsvær.

And that is exactly the point of the Grand Tour. Rather than choosing between the famous villages of eastern and western Lofoten, we connect them.

You don’t need to be a photographer either. Bring a professional camera, a compact camera or simply your phone. These are the places people associate with Lofoten, and seeing them with your own eyes is considerably better than collecting them as saved posts on Instagram.

Svolvær to Henningsvær

Our first major destination is Henningsvær, one of the most famous fishing villages in Lofoten.

Built across a collection of small islands and surrounded by sea and mountains, Henningsvær combines traditional fishing culture with galleries, cafés and a distinctly creative character.

It is also somewhere many tours travelling directly from Svolvær towards Reine simply don’t have time to include.

Ramberg and the beaches of western Lofoten

As we continue west, the landscape opens up.

The mountains remain, but suddenly they meet huge stretches of white Arctic sand and turquoise water. Ramberg is one of the best examples, and an essential stop on a journey through Lofoten.

On a sunny summer day, photographs can look suspiciously Caribbean until somebody notices the mountains in the background. The water temperature generally clears up any remaining confusion.

This section of the journey is part of what makes travelling the length of Lofoten so rewarding. Within a relatively short distance, the scenery changes constantly.

Hamnøy, Sakrisøy and Reine

Then we reach Reinefjorden.

For many visitors, this is the Lofoten they came to see.

Hamnøy, Sakrisøy and Reine sit within an extraordinary landscape of sharp mountains rising directly from the sea. Hamnøy’s bridge viewpoint in particular has become one of the classic photography locations in the archipelago. Reine itself is routinely described as one of Lofoten’s must-see destinations.

We also make a longer stop at Sakrisøy for lunch, giving you time to enjoy the surroundings rather than jumping out of the vehicle, taking three photographs and immediately disappearing again.

There is a lot to see in one day, but the experience still needs time to breathe.

All the way to Å

From Reinefjorden we continue south to Å, the last village on the E10.

Quite literally, this is the end of the road.

Å is one of Lofoten’s historic fishing communities and provides a fitting final destination before we begin the journey back towards Svolvær.

By this point you have travelled from the main town of Svolvær through Henningsvær and across the islands to Ramberg, Reinefjorden and the end of the E10

Not bad for a day’s work.

The best Lofoten tour for visitors short on time
