Sustainability Policy

Lofoten Insight AS

At Lofoten Insight, sustainability is not a buzzword. It is a responsibility. We operate in one of the most fragile and spectacular environments on Earth, and our business exists only because this place remains wild, healthy, and respected.

We are a small, locally run company based in Lofoten. Our goal is simple: to create unforgettable experiences while leaving as light a footprint as possible, and contributing positively to the local community.

Our Honest Starting Point

We currently operate diesel vehicles.

In Arctic conditions, with long distances, winter roads, limited charging infrastructure, and guest safety as our highest priority, diesel vehicles are presently the most reliable option for our operations. We acknowledge the environmental impact this has, and we do not hide it.

Sustainability is a journey, not a switch. This policy reflects where we are today, and where we are actively heading.

Reducing Environmental Impact

We actively work to minimise our footprint in the following ways:

• Careful route planning to reduce unnecessary driving and fuel use
• Small group sizes to maximise experience while minimising impact
• Regular vehicle maintenance to ensure optimal fuel efficiency
• No idling policy, engines off whenever safely possible
• Avoiding sensitive areas, respecting seasonal access restrictions
• Strict Leave No Trace principles on all tours
• Zero tolerance for litter, including micro-waste like bottle caps and cigarette ends

We choose quality over quantity. Fewer tours, done well, are better than volume-driven mass tourism.

Future Vehicle Strategy

As infrastructure, technology, and reliability improve in Arctic conditions, we aim to transition to lower-emission and electric vehicles where they genuinely make sense for safety, range, and reliability.

We regularly reassess:
• Electric and hybrid vehicle availability
• Charging infrastructure in Lofoten
• Winter performance and safety standards

When the switch becomes practical without compromising guest safety or experience, we will make it.

Supporting Local and Seasonal Tourism

Sustainability is also social and economic.

We actively:
• Employ local guides and partners
• Collaborate with local businesses, farms, and producers
• Encourage longer stays and slower travel
• Promote off-season experiences to reduce peak pressure
• Educate guests about local culture, history, and Arctic realities

Tourism should benefit the place it happens in, not overwhelm it.

Education and Awareness

Every tour is an opportunity to educate.

We help guests understand:
• Arctic ecosystems and wildlife
• Climate realities in Northern Norway
• Responsible travel behaviour
• Why conditions here are changing
• How visitors can reduce their own impact

Awareness creates respect, and respect changes behaviour.

Continuous Improvement

We commit to:
• Regularly reviewing our operations and impact
• Adapting to new technologies and best practices
• Listening to local communities and partners
• Being transparent about our choices and limitations

We will not claim perfection. We will claim responsibility.

Our Promise

Lofoten Insight exists because we love this place.

Our promise is to operate with care, honesty, and respect, to protect what makes Lofoten special, and to ensure that future generations can experience the same sense of wonder that brought us here in the first place.
