    Our adventure begins as we depart from Svinøya, weaving through breathtaking fjords and rugged mountain passes en route to a traditional Sami Siida, or reindeer camp. Our knowledgeable guide will explain the changing landscape and stop for photo opportunities along the way.

    Upon arrival at the Sami Siida, you'll be warmly welcomed by our gracious hosts, who will introduce you to the time-honoured rituals and customs of Sami life. Gather around the roaring fire of a lavvu, a traditional Sami tent, as our esteemed reindeer herder shares captivating stories passed down through generations, offering insight into the sacred bond between the Sami people and their reindeer companions.

    Prepare for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enter the reindeer paddock and interact with these gentle creatures up close. Under the expert guidance of our guide, you'll have the chance to feed and pet the reindeer, forging a deep and meaningful connection with these majestic animals that have played a central role in Sami culture for millennia.

    During the summer season a packed lunch is provided. During the winter season a warm lunch is provided. As the aroma of hearty reindeer stew fills the air, you'll indulge in a sumptuous lunch crafted from the finest local ingredients, including tender cuts of reindeer meat slow-cooked to perfection. Savour the flavours of the Arctic wilderness as you dine amidst the tranquil beauty of the Sami Siida, surrounded by stunning mountains and pristine tundra.

What You Need To Know

Where do we meet?

We will collect you from your hotel in Svolvær - let us know where you are staying when you book. If you are travelling to Svolvær for the tour we will meet you at the reception of Svinøya Rorbuer.

What time do we start?

We will collect you at approximately 09:00. The reason we say ‘approximately’ is because we may have to collect people from several hotels. We will have you back by about 15:00.

When does this tour operate?

Sami Reindeer Experience is available to book every Tuesday and Thursday from 1st September to 30th April. For private tours Monday to Friday please contact us.

What’s included in the price?

Transport, Guiding and Lunch are included. If you bring your camera, your guide will help you get great photos. Lunch and refreshments are included - Reindeer Stew with bread, cake of the day, hot drinks and water. Let us know any dietary requirements when booking.

What is the level of difficulty?

This tour is easy. There is some gentle walking involved. This tour is suitable for those aged 4 and up.

What else do I need to know?

It’s important to dress appropriately and wear good shoes. The Arctic weather can change fast in Lofoten so be prepared, be comfortable, and be warm. The cultural presentation and lunch will be inside - be prepared for the weather when you’re outside with the reindeer. We will take a scenic drive out of Lofoten to get to the Sami reindeer paddock.

The tour is a longer experience because it includes transport from Svolvær, time with the reindeer, cultural storytelling, and time to relax. Travel time is part of the Arctic adventure, and yes, the scenery helps.

Is food included?

In winter, the experience may include a warm lunch or hot food element. In summer or other seasonal versions, food arrangements may differ, such as a packed lunch or lighter refreshment option. Check the booking details for the exact inclusion.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Is this tour suitable for cruise passengers?

It can be suitable for cruise passengers with a port call in Svolvær if the ship schedule allows enough time. Because the experience includes transport, cruise guests should check timing carefully or request a private option.

What should I wear?

Dress warmly and in layers, especially in winter. Wear sturdy, waterproof shoes, wool socks, gloves, a hat, and a windproof or waterproof outer layer. Reindeer are fluffy, guests should aim for the same level of Arctic readiness.
