Sami Reindeer Experience in Lofoten: Summer and Winter with the Reindeer

There is something unforgettable about standing among reindeer. These calm, curious animals have shaped life in the Arctic for thousands of years, and with us, you can meet them up close while discovering the culture of the Sami, the Indigenous people of northern Scandinavia.

Our Sami Reindeer Experience begins in Lofoten, where we pick you up for a scenic journey to a neighbouring island. There, in a designated reindeer feeding ground, you will step into the world of the Sami herders.

The experience runs year-round, and the seasons make a big difference to the way the day unfolds.

Summer: Open Skies and Time with the Herd

In summer the Arctic is bursting with light and fresh air. After our journey from Lofoten, you will arrive at the reindeer paddock and meet your Sami guide.

You will have plenty of time to feed the reindeer, take photos, and enjoy being surrounded by the herd. These animals are friendly and often wander right up to say hello.

Summer is all about being outdoors, so lunch is a packed picnic-style meal. While you eat, your Sami host shares stories of their culture, history, and connection to the reindeer, passed down through generations.

Winter: A Warm Fire in the Laavu

When the snow falls, the entire experience takes on a completely different character. After meeting and feeding the reindeer outside, we step into the laavu, the traditional Sami tent, where a warm fire is waiting.

In the cozy glow of the laavu you will be served a hot Sami lunch, with time to listen to the stories of the Sami way of life, reindeer herding, and Arctic traditions. It is an atmospheric winter experience, with snow on the ground outside and the smell of woodsmoke in the air.

A True Arctic Tradition

Whether you visit during the long days of summer or the soft, snowy calm of winter, the Sami Reindeer Experience is a genuine connection to the people and traditions of the Arctic.

This tour is ideal for families, photographers, and anyone who wants to step away from the usual tourist trail in Lofoten. It is a journey to another world, and the memory of standing among the reindeer will stay with you long after you have returned home.
